How Do You Live Your Best Life?
Christians often talk about the importance of fellowship, not just with other believers, but also with God. How do we fellowship with God? Jesus gives us a little glimpse into why and how this works in John 14:11 - Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me.
So what is the key to living your Best Life?
We find the answer in the book of John, chapter 15, verses 4-11. Jesus tells us to REMAIN in Him and He will REMAIN in us. The answer to how we live our best life is to ABIDE in Christ and His Word.
As I have been walking with the Lord for a while, I have come to see that many believers today want to please God, but they make the mistake of letting a list of DO’s and DON'Ts they think they need to follow clutter their minds. Their intentions are good, but they don’t know where to begin. Some may have the mindset of never measuring up, or that they’re not doing enough, or think they don’t have enough faith.
What if religion has twisted the truth? The victory to these negative mindsets is something we can all do. We must surrender our will and submit to God…that is, ABIDE. Jesus came and showed us His humble heart by serving others. He seeked the Father’s Will in all He did.
Hebrews 11:6 says, “And it is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come to Him must believe that God exists and that He rewards those who sincerely seek Him.”
By seeking God, we are abiding in Him, and we please Him by doing so.
As Jesus declared publicly that He and the Father are one (see John 10:30), God is looking for us, and wanting us, to be in union with Him. Jesus came to bring Glory to the Father through His life. We have that same opportunity. As believers we are told to seek first the Kingdom of God and we will be given all that we need (see Matthew 6:33). As we seek His Kingdom, we glorify God, and by glorifying God, we’re abiding in Him.
You may be asking yourself: “How can I have that in my life?”
This is not a formula. This is a choice. We can decide to have a relationship with our creator and proclaim, “I’m all in God!” Make the decision that you will NOT focus on the problems, and the pressures of this world. You will NOT focus on the lack.
By God’s power, we have everything we need to live the life Jesus died for us to have, a life of godliness. We can make good choices because we believe all that God promises (see 2 Peter 1:1-8). If we live by our emotions and give in to our fleshly desires, the anointing and love of God will not overflow within us. Romans 8:7-9 says, “The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so. Those who are in the realm of the flesh cannot please God. You, however, are not in the realm of the flesh but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ.”
As you can see, being in OVERFLOW and ABIDING is very important if you want to live your best life. The only way to have these things, and to have victory in your life, is to focus on fellowship with God.
I know that living a godly life can be challenging at times, and our Heavenly Father knows it as well. Jesus told us as much in John 16:33 - “I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.”
We can learn godly discipline. We can learn to run to God first, seeking Him through His Word. Believe me when I say that it is well worth it!
So what is on your list of trials and tribulations - pain and sorrows?
SICKNESS ~ POVERTY ~ TEMPTATION ~ FAMILY PROBLEMS ~ UNMET EXPECTATIONS ~ UNFULFILLED DREAMS?
It is not our portion to have such lists as these. The father of lies, evil one - the devil - comes up with these lists of ours. He is the one who wants us to focus on the troubles instead of seeking out God. The Word tells us to fix our eyes on Jesus, who is the author, the initiator, of our faith. He endured the cross for us sinners so that we would not grow weary and give up (see Hebrews 12:2,3)
There are many ways to ABIDE and have fellowship with God:
Pray
Praise
Thanksgiving
Worship
Reading the Word
Fellowship with other believers
When we were created, our Father gave us a very special gift ~ Free Will. With that free will, we make many decisions each day. One decision we must make as believers is to truly believe what the Word of God says about us. The Word tells us that we are chosen, and forgiven, and redeemed, and we have an inheritance waiting for us (see Ephesians 1:4-11). God has given us His Holy Spirit to help us and guide us in these decisions. When we abide in Christ and His Word, the Holy Spirit helps us to produce much fruit in our life. We share that fruit and knowledge with others and we start to transform in the image of Christ.
Ephesians 5:1-2 tells us, “Imitate God, therefore, in everything you do, because you are His dear children. Live a life filled with love, following the example of Christ.”
Since ABIDING in Christ is how you live your best life, we should learn who He is and how to trust Him.
Proverbs 3:1-7 NIV
My son, do not forget my teaching, but keep my commands in your heart, for they will prolong your life many years and bring you peace and prosperity. Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart. Then you will win favor and a good name in the sight of God and man. Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and shun evil.
Psalm 145 shares some of God’s attributes.
He is GRACIOUS. He is WORTHY. He is GOOD. He is MAJESTIC. He is GLORIOUS. He is full of COMPASSION. He is SLOW TO ANGER. He is full of MERCY. He is NEAR to all who call on Him. He FULFILLS the desires of those who fear Him. He HEARS those who cry out to Him. He PRESERVES those who love Him.
When we see God in this light, our love and trust will be securely placed and locked in our heart.
You will know for sure that He really is a GOOD GOD!
So, are you ready to live your best life?
Love God ~ Abide in His Word ~ Trust that He will take care of you ~ Have no Fear
1 John 4:16, 17a-19 NLT
God is love, and all who live in love live in God, and God lives in them. And as we live in God, our love grows more perfect. So we will not be afraid on the day of judgement, but we can face him with confidence because we live like Jesus here in this world.
Such love has no fear, because perfect love expels all fear. If we are afraid, it is for fear of punishment, and this shows that we have not fully experienced his perfect love. We love each other because he loved us first.
God really does want us to live our BEST LIFE.
